Take the climate into account, as from June to October the rainy season increases and these areas are affected by tropical storms and, in many cases, hurricanes and typhoons. Cancún and Riviera Maya are separated by a distance of nearly 80 Km(49 mi), in each place you'll find good hotel bargains, but when it comes to accommodation, the first destination is much more touristy. If you want to visit somewhere with a slower and more calm rhythm, you might prefer staying in the Riviera.

What you'll certainly find in Cancún and Riviera Maya are the many attractions, so unless you're travelling for a long time, it'll difficult to see it all. A good way of moving from Cancún to Riviera Maya is to rent a car with GPS and visit the destinations at your own pace. If you don't want to drive and prefer a guide, you can also get one of the many tours offered around the area. Travelling by taxi is not the best idea, as some distances are too long and you won't find taxi lines at your disposal everywhere.

The "cenotes" are one of the main attractions of the area. They're natural wells in limestone grounds that have a complex line of tunnels which communicate with the sea, you'll find them in many theme parks and archaeological sites such as Chichén Itzá .You really can't miss out on them!

Don't load your suitcase with sun cream and insect repellent, it will be useless. In the main theme parks and cenotes it's prohibited to use this kind of products unless they're biodegradable and natural. This is because they don't want any residue mixing with the water. There, you'll find a wide range of products you can buy on the spot.

Although it may be tempting, do no stay in the hotel grounds for too long, this area has some of the most incredible sites of the major pre-Columbine culture: the Mayans. Learning about their history and visiting the pyramids of Tulúm and Chichén Itzá is an unforgettable experience.

If you're on a family holiday, you should visit at least one of the most famous theme parks in the area: Xcaret, Xel-Há and Xplor.
