Kolkata which was formerly known as Calcutta was once the capital of British India. Kolkata is now the capital of the Indian state of West Bengal and is the 4th largest city in India. It is fondly known as the city of Joy. Diversity reigns in every aspect of this city such as cuisine, sweets, religion, arts, people, dresses, cultures and many more. Kolkata has many landmarks and tourist places which attract people from all over the world. One of the first things that you notice upon visiting this city is its humidity. But fret not, Kolkata has lots of beaches in its vicinity where you can enjoy the sunrise and sunset.

Digha

Digha is one of the most visited beaches of West Bengal. Not only tourist but locals too like to have a trip to digha on weekends to cool themselves off. Digha is located 187 km south west of Kolkata. The sea of Digha is calm and shallow and is perfect for swimming. You can also enjoy sun bathing, horse riding and play volley ball here. At the numerous shops near the beach you can buy curios and ornaments made from sea shells. In the evening don’t forget to take a stroll on sea beach while munching on the hot fried fishes sold at the beach.

You can visit Digha from Kolkata through several buses which commute to Digha every day. You can also take a train from Howarh Station to Digha. There are many luxury and budget hotels and resorts where you can stay.

Mandarmani

Mandarmani has emerged as the latest sea beach near Kolkata and it is rapidly gaining popularity. Basic amenities like electricity have not yet reached this place. So, it’s better to reach the place before dark. It is just 63 km away from Kolkata. The sea at Mandarmani is deep and savage and the beach is covered with slit coloured sand. At the beach of Mandarmani you can take a ride on a Motor vehicle and can go for a ride through the entire length of the beach. It is perhaps one of the longest motorable beaches in India. You can also play volleyball at the beach and idly sun bathe on the sand or dive into the sea and play with the waves. A number of curio and ornament shops are located at the beach from where you can buy some takeaways. Do not forget to taste the amazing fried red crabs of Mandarmani.

To travel to Mandarmani you can book buses from Esplanade, Kolkata. You can also book private vehicles for a Mandarmani trip. You can find a number of luxury hotels and resorts where you can enjoy your stay.

Bakkhali

Bakkhali is 125 km away from Kolkata and is located on the Eastern banks of the Bengal Bay. It is smaller as compared to the beach at Digha but it attracts a large number of tourists. Its main attraction is the tortoise project, deer park and crocodile project. The mangrove of Bakkhali makes it a place worth visiting. The sea at Bakkhali is soothing and the slow rise and fall of waves gives a serene feeling to this beach. A late night stroll along the sea beach washed in moonlight will make your stay worth remembering.

To reach Bakkhali you need to reach Namkhana first. From Namkhana you have to cross the Hatania Doania river by boat. After reaching the other end take a road journey to Bakkhali. At Bakkhali you can stay at some private hotels or you can stay at the Bakkhali Tourist Lodge run by WBTDC.

Shankarpur

At 14 km East of Digha lies the beach of Shankarpur. Its natural charm is yet unspoiled as not many people visit this secluded beach. The Shankarpur Fishing Harbour Project is a thing worth seeing as it boastfully displays its Hermit Crabs. Shankarpur beach also takes pride in its caesarian groves. At the sea of Shankarpur take a swim or blissfully sunbathe at this quiet beach.

To reach Shankarpur book the bus at Esplanade, Kolkata which takes you directly to your destination. You can also take the indirect route by taking the Digha bound bus and get down at Chaawlkhoa. From there you can take a car to Shankarpur.

Other Beaches

There are also some other unspoiled, small beaches which are a perfect destination if you want to have a quiet time. These beaches are Frazerganj, Henery’s Island and Sagardwip.

Frazerganj is a small beach named ater the Lt Governor of Bengal Andrew Frazer who loved this beach and built a huge bungalow on it. The Frazer bungalow no longer remains on this island as it had long been swallowed up by sea. But this beach is perfect for a quiet getaway. You can reach Frazerganj from Kolkata by WBSTC bus. It is a 5 hours journey.

Henery’s Island was named after a British surveyor and is surrounded with dense mangrove forest. At Henry’s Island there is a watchtower where you can climb and get complete view of the island. Henery’s Island is also a bird watching site. It is 130 km from Kolkata and you can reach there through Bus from Esplanade, Kolkata.

Sagardwip Beach is a part of the islands of Sundarban. Visit this place during Gangasagar mela celebrations on Makar Sankranti when it is considered auspicious to take a dip into the confluence where Ganga flows into the Bengal Bay. If you are looking for adventure then hire a boat and go Dolphin spotting. To visit Sagardwip beach hire a car or taxi from Kolkata which will take you directly to your destination.
