El Yunque

This National Forest, in fact the only rainforest on U.S land, is just east of Puerto Rico's capital San Juan. The National Park is home to several different treks suited for both experienced and less experienced hikers. The Big Tree trail is a less strenuous walk to the picturesque La Mina Falls and a little further on is La Coca Falls, a beautiful and refreshing waterfall - great for cooling off! Those wanting a more challenging trail should try the El Toro, a walk that leads through several areas of diverse forest before leading you out onto Pico El Toro, the highest peak in the National Park and a view definitely worth the hike!

Bosque Estatal de Guanica

Heading to the South East of San Juan, is the beautiful Guánica Biosphere Reserve, a much more dry and humid landscape in Puerto Rico. This reserve provides several fairly easy hikes, all of which lead to excellent view points, perfect for a picnic stop. Whilst none of these trails are too challenging, be wary of the the heat and the strong sun in this humid atmosphere so remember to pack the water bottle! Whilst the views in Puerto Rico may seem like reward enough, there are also opportunities to see some rare bird species in these areas, so keep your eyes peeled!

Bosque Estatal de Guajataca

Guajataca Forest Reserve is one of the 'must see''s of hiking in Puerto Rico. The first trail for hikers leads right out into la Cueva del Viento, an eerily dark, yet impressive cave filled with stalagmites and various tunnels. Hikers are free to explore this forest without a cave so make sure you're carrying a map! There are several other hiking trails within this forest, so a day can easily be filled here exploring and taking in the scenery. There are also guest houses providing accommodation here for those who want to spend a little longer visiting the surrounding beaches and lakes, perfect areas for a cooling swim after a long hike!
