We are all fascinated by robots, may they be featured in movies or love having them around the house to help us clean the floor. Since we were little we've dreamt of having a robot with which we can play and, once we are adults, they can do our most hated domestic chores, but at the moment this can't come true or at least not as we had imagined. A very simple game you can create at home with the help of the little ones is to make a homemade robot hand. You'll be able to use this to teach your children to create their own toys as they'll enjoy it much more. If you want to learn how to make a robot hand out of straws, don't miss the following OneHowto video.

You'll need:

  • 5 staws
  • Quite a lot of string
  • Scissors
  • Sticky tape
  • A toilet paper roll
  • A glove

As you need to use scissors to be able to create a robot hand, it's recommendable that there's always an adult present. The first thing to do is to measure the size of the fingers and cut on the marked likes, then thread the string through the straws and then you'll be able to pull. The straws will be the fingers and the strings will be the tendons that move the fingers. Then, if you want you can cover it with a glove so the hand looks real.

Tips

  • You can use this robot hand to scare someone, you could stick the hand at the end of a long tube and pretend you arm has fallen off.
  • If you want the robot hand to last for long, we recommend you tie knots at the tip of the fingers so they don't escape and it keeps working.

Thank you so much for this video, it is just what I was looking for. I did have problems taping straws in toilet paper roll and ended up cutting it. My students will love it. I wish you had printable instructions.
